Five reasons you should see the Great Gatsby

Screen Shot 2012-10-28 at 12.44.11 PM

ANGELA RANKE: The Great Gatsby is due to hit the big screen in May. Ever since I read the book by the same name back in high school, the GG has held a special place in my heart. When I saw the trailer in the cinemas recently I sat reverentially in my seat and shushed my friend into a respectful silence. As Big Kev would say "I'm excited!". Here's five reasons you should be too: 1. Baz luhrmann - the man who introduced the world to Moulin Rouge and Strictly Ballroom is bringing to life … [Read more...]

My Kitchen Rules: A melting pot of bullying?

My-Kitchen-Rules-2013-Ashlee-Sophia-vs-Angela-Melina

CHRISTINE BARTON: Public outrage has broken out on the social media-sphere, following the departure of everyone’s favourite ‘yummy mummies’ on My Kitchen Rules. The TV war between feisty contestants Angela and Melina, and Ashlee and Sophia, has been slammed on social media sites like Facebook, with some users even going as far to comment that the Channel 7 hit show promotes “bullying and racism” and is outright “disgraceful”. The rivalry between the Asians (as they have become … [Read more...]

Music deja-vu…of the worst kind

girl_with_headphones

CHRISTINE BARTON: These days, it feels like every time I turn on the radio, I find myself listening to a cover or ‘sample’ mix of a song that was a hit when I was running around in nappies. Despite the fact that most pop songs sound the same these days, much of today’s music seem to draw parts, or entirely, from songs that have been and gone. Copying existing tracks is a big ‘no-no’ in the music industry, and it’s a lesson Aussie band, Men at Work, learned the hard way. In their … [Read more...]

Giant tarantulas, sex with your boss – what dreams are made of

dream-catcher-clock

BECI VIRGEN: Tarantulas pinning you down with supersized hairy legs. Exploding cabbages. Falling from a building with your pants down. Sound crazy? These are the ideas that dreams are made of. Before researchers unpacked the science of dreaming, it was believed that a sleeping brain was a resting brain. However, it has since been discovered that dreaming is a very active, internal state that everybody experiences several times a night, even if you believe that you don’t dream. A wise … [Read more...]

The real chick flicks: why women should watch sci-fi

Princess Leia in bikini in "Return of the Jedi"

NICOLA GARLAND: Science fiction (known in the film industry as “Sci-fi”) is so often classified as a male-orientated film genre, and yet for the modern woman, these films should really be considered essential viewing. This might seem odd considering that for the uninitiated, visions of females in classic Sci-fi films like Star Wars can be summarised by every pubescent boy’s fantasy, i.e. Princess Leia in a bikini. But with women now playing senators, captains of ships and powerful … [Read more...]

Triple J’s hottest 100 winner Thrift Shop divides listeners

Thrift Shop, the number 1 song on the hottest 100 countdown, has split listeners.

ANGELA RANKE: The Triple J’s Hottest 100 winner has divided listeners as the post-mortem analysis of the popular Australia Day poll begins. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ Thrift Shop (feat.Wanz) came in at number one on the hotly anticipated countdown. The result split listeners, with many taking to social media to voice their outrage and approval. “I loathe this song with every fibre of my being,” said one fan, commenting on the station’s Facebook page. “Australia are … [Read more...]

Violence against women in India is a cultural problem

The brutal bashing and rape of an Indian woman brought about a wave of protests.

PRANAV HEMMADI: A few days before we celebrated Christmas 2012 a young woman was savagely sexually assaulted with a metal rod on a moving bus in New Delhi. After being thrown out of the bus and spending close to an hour unconscious in the street, a passerby notified police and the victim was rushed to the hospital.  She suffered major internal organ failure, with some reports claiming she only had about 10 per cent of her intestines actually in her system.  She died not long … [Read more...]

The Hobbit: framing the issue of high frame rates

The Hobbit introduces high frame rate moviemaking to cinemagoers.

BENJAMIN ZAUGG: Much like 3D, many see high frame rates (HDR) as a powerful new storytelling tool, others as a gimmick designed to carve out a new premium tier of ticket. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in middle earth. After seeing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey I knew that one article couldn't adequately address both the film's story and the 48 frames-per-second that brought it to me. Now having conquered the former, I'm setting out on a new quest -  to address the contentious … [Read more...]

Hart’s pulling all the strings at Woodford Folk Festival

Tim Hart plays for the crowd at the Woodford Folk Festival.

NICOLA GARLAND: By far and away the best new find of the Woodford Folk Festival line-up on December 27 was Tim Hart. Hart, better known as the drummer from Boy and Bear, has taken a bold step to break away from the popular sounds of his band and strike out on his own. And the gamble has paid off. With his sound ranging from Ryan Adams (think Answering Bell or The Rescue Blues) and Don McLean, Hart is so much more than the sum of his drum kit. Don’t be fooled by the kitsch-y video clips … [Read more...]

The Hobbit: An unexpected journey, the extended edition

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit is far too long at 170-minutes.

UPDATE: I saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 48 frames-per-second 3D. I felt that this format deserved its own article. Check it out here. BENJAMIN ZAUGG: Right at the beginning of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, there is a wonderful scene depicting Thrór, the Dwarf King of Erebor, surrounded by mountains of gold, going completely mad with greed and power. As I watched the rest of the film I would frequently find myself recalling that scene and substituting that Dwarf King with … [Read more...]
